What You Pay Attention To Is Who You Become—And It’s Costing You More Than You Think

Hi, this is Monique Rhodes. Welcome to the In Your Right Mind podcast, where we’re learning how to be happier by working with our minds. If you'd like to know more about what I teach, come to iintendtobehappy.com. I’d love to help you get on the path to being happier—because everyone deserves to be happy, and I want that for you too.

The Challenge of Attention

One of my students recently told me she was struggling to maintain her focus. In our modern world, attention is a precious commodity. We’re constantly inundated with notifications, advertisements, and distractions—all vying for a slice of our focus.

But it’s not just external forces fragmenting our attention; it’s often our own choices. We say “yes” when we mean “no,” and allow interruptions to dictate our day.

Attention as Currency

Think of attention as a currency—a resource you use to purchase your experiences. Where you invest it deeply determines the richness of your life.

Protecting your time requires courage. It’s about setting boundaries, making intentional choices, and sometimes disappointing others to stay true to yourself. Every moment spent on something misaligned with your values is a moment lost—one you can never get back.

Courage Through Clarity

The courage to protect your time isn’t about rigidity; it’s about clarity. Safeguarding your time creates space for what truly matters.

Your future is shaped by where you direct your attention today. Focus on meaningful tasks, nurturing relationships, and personal growth, and you’ll lay a foundation for a fulfilling tomorrow. Spend your time mindlessly scrolling, binge-watching, or obsessing over news cycles, and you risk building a foundation for dissatisfaction.

The Power of Progress

It’s not about perfection—it’s about progress. Make choices consciously, aligning them with your aspirations.

Set clear priorities. For me, this means meditating, exercising, and spending time with friends. These are non-negotiables that make me feel good.

Establish boundaries. Limit distractions. Set specific times for emails, social media, and other interruptions.

Engage fully in the present moment. Meditation is a powerful tool to help you do this—whether you’re working, connecting with someone, or simply relaxing.

Reflect and Adjust

Regularly reflect on how you’re spending your time. Look at your screen usage—it can be shocking to realize just how much time is lost to distractions.

Imagine if you redirected that time to something meaningful. How different would your life feel?

Living with Intention

Taking control of your attention is an ongoing journey that requires self-awareness, discipline, and tough choices. The reward is a life of intention, purpose, and fulfillment—all of which lead to greater happiness.

The Opportunity of Every Moment

Remember, every moment is an opportunity to choose where you’ll direct your focus. If you make that choice wisely, you’ll not only shape your days but also your destiny.

I hope this has been helpful.

As always, be kind, take care, and go gently in the world.
