Hi, this is Monique Rhodes. Welcome to the In Your Right Mind Podcast, where we're learning how to be happier by working with our minds.
If you'd like to know more about what I teach, come to iintendtobehappy.com and let's get you started on a path to being happier.
The Real Question
I was being interviewed recently, and the host asked me something I hear often:
"Why is meditation so important?"
I paused—not because I didn’t know,
but because I wanted to tell the truth.
Not the Instagram version.
The real version.
What People Think Meditation Is
Many imagine meditation as:
- Becoming calm.
- Clearing the mind.
- Escaping into a blissful state.
And sometimes those moments come.
But that’s not the point.
At least not the way I’ve been taught.
What Meditation Really Does
Meditation helps you see.
- The body you’re living in—tight shoulders, tired bones.
- The breath you’re holding without noticing.
- The thoughts looping endlessly.
- The stories shaping your life without your awareness.
It’s about seeing your real life—
not the one you’re hoping for,
but the one that’s here right now.
Turning the Lights On
Meditation doesn’t fix everything.
It doesn’t erase your history or your habits.
But it does give you sight.
It helps you sit with the truth of the moment and say:
"This is what’s here."
Without judgment.
Without needing to change it immediately.
With gentleness and precision.
The Space Between
The more you practice seeing clearly,
the less you’re ruled by reactivity.
That space between stimulus and response?
It grows.
And in that space—you have choices.
Small choices that open the doorway to everything.
No More Running
When we stop trying to run from discomfort,
we begin to understand what it’s teaching us.
Meditation isn’t about fixing yourself.
It’s about meeting yourself—right here—
with curiosity instead of critique.
The Quiet Revolution
Over time, simply being with what’s real changes everything.
- You become more honest.
- More compassionate.
- More available to the truth of the moment.
You don’t need to push it away.
You don’t need to cling to it.
You just allow it to be.
Why It Matters
Meditation matters because it brings you back—
not to your ideal self,
but to your real self.
The one that’s breathing here, now.
The one that’s already enough.
In a world that says “fix, hustle, improve, escape,”
just being with yourself is no small thing.
It’s revolutionary.
I hope this has been helpful.
As always, be kind, take care, and go gently in the world.
