Why Nothing Seems to Be Working—And Why That Might Be a Sign You’re on the Right Track

Hi, this is Monique Rhodes. Welcome to the In Your Right Mind Podcast, where we're learning how to be happier by working with our minds.

If you'd like to know more about what I teach, come to iintendtobehappy.com, and let’s get you started on getting happier.

The Question That Comes Up Often

One of my students wrote to me.

She said:

“I’m working so hard on myself and my goals, but I’m not seeing any results. How do I stay motivated when nothing seems to be changing?”

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this question.

And it points us toward something important.

Seeds vs. Trees

We live in a world obsessed with trees.

The visible results.

The book published.

The weight lost.

The business launched.

The success others can see.

But no tree grows without a seed.

And no seed turns into a tree overnight.

What Really Matters

The work of growth is invisible at first.

It begins beneath the surface.

It starts with small, steady acts.

  • A five-minute walk instead of scrolling.
  • A kind word instead of silence.
  • A glass of water instead of sugar.
  • A pause for breath instead of rushing.

Tiny choices that no one applauds—yet they change everything over time.

Don’t Compare Your Seed to Someone Else’s Summer

It’s easy to feel behind when we see someone else in full bloom.

But what we’re really seeing is their harvest season.

What we don’t see are the years of quiet planting.

The patience.

The trust.

Your power lies in the seed you plant today, not in demanding a tree tomorrow.

Faithful to the Process

When you show up to plant—

Without rushing.

Without forcing.

Without giving up—

Something inside you begins to shift.

Anxiety softens.

Impatience eases.

And instead of asking, “When will I get there?”

You begin to ask, “What can I plant today?”

A Gentle Reminder

If today feels ordinary or small—

Plant anyway.

Trust the roots you can’t yet see.

Because trees may be what the world notices—

But seeds are where your power lies.

As always, be kind, take care, and go gently in the world.
