You’ve Been Focusing on the Wrong Part of Yourself This Whole Time

Hi, this is Monique Rhodes. Welcome to the In Your Right Mind Podcast, where we're learning how to be happier by working with our minds.

If you'd like to know more about what I teach, come to howhappyami.com and let’s get you started so we can see how happy you really are.

What If You’re Looking in the Wrong Direction?

Someone asked me recently what I mean when I talk about our “basic goodness.”

It’s such an important question.

The Stories We Keep Telling

At some point, life asks us a crucial question:

Will I keep believing the old story about what’s wrong with me—or will I begin to trust what’s right with me?

So many of us know our flaws by heart.

  • I’m too sensitive.
  • I mess things up.
  • I’m not enough.
  • I don’t get it right.

And these stories become our identity.

But they’re not the truth of who we are.

The Truth Beneath the Noise

Yes, we’re imperfect.

Yes, we make mistakes.

But underneath that?

There’s something steady.

There’s something kind.

There’s something whole.

It’s your basic goodness.

It’s the part of you that listens to this podcast.

The part of you that wants to grow.

That knows how to say, I’m sorry, or I’ll try again tomorrow.

Why We Miss It

We’re trained to perform.

  • Be flawless.
  • Be successful.
  • Hide your vulnerability.

And in doing so, we lose sight of what’s already right within us.

The Power of Shifting Focus

There’s real strength in choosing to trust the parts of you that are kind and good.

Not because you’re perfect—

But because you’re human.

This shift won’t erase fear or shame.

But it will stop you from building your identity around them.

No more replaying those old records.

No more dropping the needle on stories that never served you.

Root Into Something Deeper

When you lean into your goodness—

  • You stop needing to prove yourself.
  • Your relationships soften.
  • Your decisions begin to align.

Because you’re learning to trust again.

Remembering What’s Always Been True

This is a practice.

You’ll forget.

You’ll fall back.

But every time you return to your worth—

Every time you remember your goodness—

You plant a seed.

And true transformation?

It doesn’t begin with fixing what’s wrong.

It begins with remembering what’s always been right.

I hope this has been helpful. As always, take care of yourself, take care of each other, be kind, and go gently in the world.
