Hi, this is Monique Rhodes. Welcome to the In Your Right Mind Podcast, where we're learning how to be happier by working with our minds.
If you'd like to know more about what I teach, come to moniquerhodes.com and let's get you started on some ways to get you happier.
Wants vs. Needs
I was in class a few days ago with some of my students, and we were looking at the difference between wants and needs.
It was such a powerful conversation—because when we paused to reflect, something became clear:
So many of the things we truly need… we already have.
The Culture of More
We live in a world constantly whispering:
- More time.
- More money.
- More success.
- More validation.
We see it in ads. We feel it in comparisons. We carry this constant pressure to optimize every moment of our day.
But this pressure—this hunger for more—is often what blinds us to what’s already here.
Satisfaction is Radical
To be satisfied with what you already have isn’t complacency.
It’s not laziness.
It’s wisdom.
It’s a radical act of presence.
It’s a moment when we stop long enough to say:
“This life I’m in—it’s already full.”
That doesn’t mean we stop growing.
But it does mean we stop grasping.
We stop missing life while chasing life.
The Deeper Meaning of Gratitude
Gratitude isn’t a fluffy positive thought.
It’s not a trick to feel better.
- It’s earned.
- It’s grounded.
- It’s forged in the middle of life’s imperfections.
And when we shift from lack to enoughness,
something in us softens.
The critic quiets.
The striving stills.
And suddenly, we notice:
- This breath.
- This cup of tea.
- This aching heart.
- This laugh with a friend.
It’s all part of the gift.
You’re Already Standing in the Middle of Something Beautiful
What if richness wasn’t measured by what you acquire—
but by how deeply you appreciate what’s already here?
What if the doorway to joy was not something you had to build,
but something you simply had to walk through?
Because the truth is this:
Gratitude isn’t a reward for having it all together.
It’s the key to realizing—
you’re already living a life worthy of your attention.
You just have to notice.
As always, be kind, take care, and go gently in the world.
